Chromatic adaptation in marine Synechococcus strains.
Characterization of two genetically distinct groups of marine Synechococcus sp. strains shows that one, but not the other, increases its phycourobilin/phycoerythrobilin chromophore ratio when growing in blue light. This ability of at least some marine Synechococcus strains to chromatically adapt may help explain their greater abundance in particular ocean environments than cyanobacteria of the ...
متن کاملRegulation of ntcA expression and nitrite uptake in the marine Synechococcus sp. strain WH 7803.
NtcA is a transcriptional activator involved in global nitrogen control in cyanobacteria. In the absence of ammonium it regulates the transcription of a series of genes encoding proteins required for the uptake and assimilation of alternative nitrogen sources (I. Luque, E. Flores, and A. Herrero, EMBO J. 13:2862-2869, 1994). ntcA, present in a single copy in the marine Synechococcus sp. strain ...
متن کاملSelection and characterization of cyanophage resistance in marine Synechococcus strains.
Marine viruses are an important component of the microbial food web, influencing microbial diversity and contributing to bacterial mortality rates. Resistance to cooccurring cyanophages has been reported for natural communities of Synechococcus spp.; however, little is known about the nature of this resistance. This study examined the patterns of infectivity among cyanophage isolates and unicel...
متن کاملNi uptake and limitation in marine Synechococcus strains.
Ni accumulation and utilization were studied in two strains of marine Synechococcus, isolated from both coastal (CC9311; clade I) and open-ocean (WH8102; clade III) environments, for which complete genome sequences are available. Both strains have genes encoding an Ni-containing urease and when grown on urea without Ni become Ni-N colimited. The Ni requirements of these strains also depend upon...
متن کاملDraft Genome Sequence of Marine Cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. Strain NKBG15041c
Synechococcus sp. strain NKBG15041c was isolated as a fast-growing marine cyanobacterium. Genetic transformation techniques using this strain have been well established for metabolic engineering. Here we report the draft genome sequence for this strain, consisting of 44 contigs containing a total of 3,180,043 bp and 3,224 putative protein-coding genes.
